A Cozy Granny Square Crochet Bag Free Pattern: Handmade With Love

Hi everyone, today I am bringing to you a cozy granny square bag (free pattern). There’s something timeless and comforting about granny squares. With their classic shape and endless color possibilities, they are one of the most iconic crochet motifs — and the perfect foundation for a handmade bag.

The video tutorial can be found here:

A Cozy Granny Square Crochet Bag Free Pattern: Texture And Details

This granny square crochet bag is a beautiful blend of tradition and modern style. Made from carefully selected yarns in soft blues, greys, cream, and black, it combines contrast and harmony in a way that feels both cozy and stylish. Each granny square is crocheted individually, then joined together to create a sturdy and eye-catching structure.

What truly sets this bag apart is its texture. The raised stitches of the granny squares give it depth and character, while the plush, fluffy trim along the top adds a warm and playful touch. This soft border not only enhances the design but also gives the bag a cozy, winter-ready feel.

I love this crochet purse so much!

The handles are made from twisted silk like rope, providing both strength and comfort. They complement the handmade look perfectly and make the bag practical for everyday use. A few months ago, I crocheted this lovely granny square cardigan that also features these exact same squares. This patchwork cardigan design was a huge success and is perfect if you want a matching set.

General Pattern Notes

We will be crocheting 6 granny squares individually.

Once we have crocheted all the required squares, these will be sewed together to create the initial bag shape (a rectangle).

We will then sew both side seams to create bag shape; once this is done, we will be adding the frilly edging around the top opening.

Then the straps are sewed into the bag with darning thread and needle.

You can add a clothe lining inside the bag if you wish.

Granny square pattern (make 6):

To start, make a slip knot with silver yarn.

Ch 4, sl st through 1st stitch to form a ring.

1: Ch 3 (=DC throughout), 2 DC inside ring; [ch 2, 3 DC] inside ring 3 more times, ch 2, sl st to beginning ch 3.

2: Now ch 3, turn your work, 2 DC into same space, ch 2, 3 DC inside ch sp from previous row (= 3DC, ch 2, 3DC which forms a corner). [Go directly into next sp, 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC] 3 more times. Sl st to first 3 ch to join round.

Row 3

3: Now ch 3, turn your work, 2 DC inside space (=3 DC). [Go directly into next sp with 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (=corner); 3 DC into the next space] 3 times. In last space place 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (corner). Sl st to close off round.

4: Ch 3, turn your work, [Go directly into next sp with 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (=corner); 3 DC into next two spaces] 3 times. In last space place 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (corner). Sl st to close off round.

5: Ch 3, turn your work, [Go directly into next sp with 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (=corner); 3 DC into next three spaces] 3 times. In last space place 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (corner). Sl st to close off round.

Now sew your squares together to create the bag:
Place all of your squares as indicated in the photo below so as to create the bag shape:

Sew all of these squares together using a tapestry needle and a piece of yarn. Use the mattress stitch and black yarn for this part.

Now fold over your project to create the bag shape as seen here:

Sew your first seam as follows: attach yarn to one bottom corner and sew all the way up to create first side in using the mattress stitch. Fasten off once you reach the top of the bag, and repeat on the other side.

Fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.

Add frilly border at the top of the bag

Attach cream yarn to any stitch at the top of the bag. For this part, we will be working our stitches on the front loop only of the stitches (for row 1 of the frilly border).

Row 1: Ch 1 (=SC), place a SC into each stitch across the top of the bag, in the front loop only. Once you have gone all the way across, slip stitch to first ch 1 from the beginning.

2: Ch 3 (=DC), place another 2 DCs in the first stitch (=3 DC together in one stitch); place 3 DC into the next stitch until you reach the first chain 3 at the beginning. Slip stitch to first ch 3 to close off round.

3: Ch 3 (=DC), place a DC into each DC along until the end of the round; slip stitch to first chain 3 to close off round.
