Crochet Bernadette Prayer Shawl Free Pattern
Hi everyone, today I am bringing to you the crochet Bernadette prayer shawl (free pattern). This crochet project is perfect in all seasons, and is one of my favorite crocheted shawls to date. Inspired by a 19th century design, this crochet shawl is both feminine and practical.
The video tutorial for this project can be found here:
Crochet Bernadette Prayer Shawl Free Pattern: The Inspiration
This lovely and unique shawl was inspired by Sainte Bernadette, of Lourdes, France. I absolutely love Saint Bernadette, and I feel a special connection to her. Indeed, over the last few years I have truly been inspired by the humility and holiness of Saint Bernadette.
The reason why I say I was inspired by Saint Bernadette’s shawl, is because she wore a similar shawl on many of her photos. Indeed, when you look at photographs of Saint Bernadette, she is often wearing a very simple yet stunning shawl featuring stripes at the bottom. This new crochet shawl is part of my Vintage Crochet Series.
It was after I had crocheted the shawl, that I realized that the shawl I was making resembled the one Saint Bernadette was wearing! It was uncanny, and yet it wasn’t a direct replica of shawl featured in the above photograph. Indeed, initially I was crocheting a shawl that resembled some of the 19th century designs that I had seen. I was loosely inspiring myself from vintage 19th century designs I had seen in photographs and films.
However, once I had almost completed the garment, I instantly recalled Saint Bernadette’s shawl. I then realized that it had an uncanny resemblance to her shawl, and this made me so happy as I have a devotion to this wonderful saint.
Crochet Bernadette Prayer Shawl Free Pattern: A 19th Century Inspiration
As stated prior, this shawl was inspired by designs that I have seen over time that were typical of the 19th century. I had wanted to crochet a similar design for a long time, and decided to crochet this simple shawl recently.
After I had almost finished this vintage shawl, I realized this new vintage prayer shawl was very similar to the one worn by Saint Bernadette. I truly believe I was unconsciously inspired by this beautiful shawl. Let me know what you think in the comments!
As I stated earlier, this crochet shawl is also a prayer shawl. This seems very fitting as I was inspired by the beautiful Saint Bernadette of Lourdes. This vintage prayer shawl that I made a few weeks ago is also a prayer shawl featuring two colors.
For this new prayer shawl, I used Stylecraft Special Aran in two different colors. Indeed, I used a deep pink shade called Fondant and a chocolate brown shade called Mocha. This is a very classic and soft 100% acrylic yarn that can be substituted by another 100% acrylic yarn in a medium 4/aran weight. You could use Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice for example, as a substitute.
