Level: Easy/beginner

Gauge

4” (10 cm): 6 rows

Size of finished bandana (excluding ties on each side)

9” x 16” (23 cm x 40,5 cm)

Notes

I will be using US terms (British terms in brackets).

You will need

1 skein of Drops Muskat in shade 30 Vanilla Yellow (or your preferred light 3/DK 100% cotton yarn of your preference)

4 mm crochet hook

A pair of scissors

A tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Ch: chain

St: stitch

Sl st: slip stitch

Sp: space

SC: Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)

DC: Double Crochet (UK Treble Crochet)

EOR: End of row

To begin

To start, make a slip knot.

Ch 4, sl st through 1^st chain to form a ring.

1: Ch 3 (= DC), 5 DC in ring; ch 2, 6 DC in ring.

2: Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, DC in 1^st stitch (=2 DC together in one stitch); now place a DC into each stitch across until you reach the ch 2 sp at the top; in ch 2 sp, place 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC. Now once again place a DC into each st across until eor, placing 2 DC into the last stitch to finish off row.

3: repeat row 2.

Row 4

Row 4: Ch 3 (=DC), DC into same 1^st stitch; turn your work, [ch 1, sk 1 st, DC] until penultimate stitch before ch 2 space at top of project; sk last stitch, place 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC in chain 2 space; sk 1 stitch, [DC in next stitch, ch 1, sk 1 st, DC] until you reach last stitch; place 2 DC into last stitch.

5: Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, place another DC into 1^st stitch; place a DC into next stitch until eor, including chain spaces from previous row.

6-7: repeat row 5.

8: repeat row 4.

9: repeat row 5.

10-11: repeat row 5.

12: repeat row 4.

Create your first tie before starting the final row (shell stitch border); to create first tie, do not fasten off, and chain 45 (see photograph below).

Once you have finished chaining 45, sk 1^st chain, and slip stitch through 2^nd and each chain across until you reach the first chain; slip stitch DC from last row to secure tie.

We will now be completing the shell stitch edging with our yarn still attached to the project.

Row 13

Row 13 (shell stitch border): begin by slip stitching through the next; 8 stitch before reaching the ch space from row 13. Place 7 DC in this space; go directly into next space with a SC; * Place 7 DC into the next space, then place a SC into the next space*; repeat from * until you reach the last two stitches before the chain 2 space at the top of the project.

Once you reach the last two stitches before the chain 2 space, slip stitch through both stitches before placing 7 DC into the top space.

Now slip stitch through the next two stitches, then place a SC into the next space from row 13. * Place 7 DC into the next space, then place a SC into the next space*; repeat from * until you reach the last two stitches at the end of the row.

Slip stitch through the last two stitches, and then create second tie.

Chain 45; once you have finished chaining 45, sk 1^st chain, and slip stitch through 2^nd and each chain across until you reach the first chain; slip stitch DC from last row to secure tie.

Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
