Crochet Demure Victorian Shawl Free Pattern

Hi everyone, today I am bringing to you the crochet Demure Victorian Shawl (free pattern). This crochet project is so feminine, and features a unique and feminine design. Crocheted with Mandala yarn by Lion Brand, this is a very easy project to make.

The video tutorial for this project is available here:

Crochet Demure Victorian Shawl Free Pattern: The Design

This crochet shawl is very lovely, and it is inspired by the Victorian Era. The Victorian Era spans the 63 years from the beginning to the end of Queen Victoria’s reign in England, from 1837 to 1901. The fashion of the Victorian Era changed a lot over the many years of Queen Victoria’s reign. However, shawls and hats were very much very popular throughout the whole era.

This Victorian shawl is very feminine and demure

Shawls became increasingly triangular shaped, and featured lots of different designs. Wool and warmer shawls and wraps were very popular as these were used day to day. A few months ago, I crocheted this Victorian cape with a hood.ย

For this design, I used a feminine treble crochet corner to corner design, making this a triangular shawl. This part is crocheted with Mandala yarn by Lion Brand. The border and edging of the shawl are crocheted with Bernat Softee Baby yarn in shade Antique White. This border features a lovely and feminine picot edging.

This Victorian shawl features a corner to corner design. The corner to corner stitch is so soothing, and looks absolutely stunning once it is crocheted. This vintage sontag I made a while back also features the C2C design.

The corner to corner pattern looks lovely once crocheted up. It makes a great stitch for either shawls or blankets, in my opinion. Once this crochet shawl has been made, we will be crocheting a demure and delicate picot stitch border. This delicate picot edging elevates the shawl so much. Picot stitches just add such a lovely and vintage vibe to any accessory.

Let me know if you enjoy crocheting vintage crochet projects as much as I do. I love vintage designs, and can’t wait to bring you more vintage crochet designs very soon.

A pair of scissors

A tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Ch: chain

St: stitch

Sl st: slip stitch

SC: Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)

TC: Treble crochet (UK Double Treble Crochet)

To begin

To start, make a slip knot.

1: Ch 7, TC in 5th ch from the hook and in each st along (=4 TC).

2: Ch 7, turn work, TC in 5h ch from hook and in each st along (=4 TC); turn work to sl st in between the 3rd and 4th TC from the previous row; ch 4 (counts as a TC throughout), and add 3 TC in between the 3rd and 4th TC from the previous row to form a square.

3: Ch 7, turn your work, TC in 5th ch from hook, TC in each st along (=4 TC); sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th TC; ch 4 (=TC), and add 3 TC in that space, sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th TC. Ch 4 (=TC), and add 3 TC in that space, sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th TC.

4-41: repeat row 3, adding the required number of squares as you go along.

Fasten off Lion Brand Mandala yarn.

Picot Stitch Edging

We will be placing the border across the 2 sides that forms the โ€œVโ€ shape of the shawl (see photos of project).
Attach Bernat Softee Baby yarn to the same stitch where we fastened off Mandala yarn.

1: Ch 1 (=SC), place a SC all across the edge of the shawl until you reach the top of the โ€œVโ€.

Now go down the other side of the โ€œVโ€ with SCs once again.

Note concerning row 1:

There is not a specific number of SCs you need to place; this is the wrong side of the stitches, so just make sure you place all the SC evenly so as not to โ€œtightenโ€ the project.

2: Ch 1 (=SC), turn your work, place a SC into next stitch until eor.

3 (picot edging row): ch 1 (=turning chain), place a SC into same first stitch; SC into next 2 stitches; chain 3, slip stitch through the front stitches of the SC to finish off this stitch (picot stitch).

[place a SC into next 3 stitches, chain 3, slip stitch through the front stitches of the SC to finish off this stitch] until eor.

Once you have gone all around the two sides of this shawl, finish on a simple SC if you can (optional).

Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
