Level: Easy/beginner

Gauge

4” (10 cm): 8 rows

Size of finished bandana (excluding ties on each side)

11” x 19” (28 cm x 48 cm)

I will be using US terms (British terms in brackets).

You will need

100 grams of Fantasy Yarns 4 ply/fingering yarn 50% bamboo & 50% cotton yarn (purchased from Etsy)

A 4 mm crochet hook

Pair of scissors

A tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Ch: chain

St: stitch

Sl st: slip stitch

Sp: space

SC: Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)

DC: Double Crochet (UK Treble Crochet)

EOR: End of row

To begin

To start, make a slip knot.

Ch 4, sl st through 1^st chain to form a ring.

1: Ch 3 (= DC), 5 DC in ring; ch 2, 6 DC in ring.

2: Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, DC in 1^st stitch, [ch 1, sk 1 st, DC] until penultimate stitch before ch 2 space at top of project; sk last stitch, place 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC in chain 2 space; sk 1 stitch, [DC in next stitch, ch 1, sk 1 st, DC] until you reach last stitch; place 2 DC into last stitch.

3: Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, place another DC into 1^st stitch; place a DC into next stitch until you reach ch 2 space at the top of the project (including chain spaces); place 2 DC, ch 2, 2 DC into the ch space from previous row; now place a DC into each stitch across (including ch spaces) until eor; place 2 DC into last stitch.

Rows 4-18: alternate rows 2 and 3, finishing on a row 2.

Do not fasten off.

Create first tie

Without fastening off, chain 45.

Slip stitch through second chain from hook, and into each chain across until end of chain.

Slip stitch through the first stitch on project to secure tie to the project.

Do not fasten off.

Shell stitch edging

We will be crocheting the shell stitch edging directly across the “V” side of the bandana (see photographs).

Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), place a SC into the 2^nd DC at the beginning of row.

Now place 5 DC into first chain space on project (=shell); SC directly into next space to anchor edging down.

* Go directly into next chain space, place 5 DC (=shell); now go directly into next space with a SC. * Repeat from * until you reach last space on first side (place a shell stitch into the last space before the chain 2 space from previous row); now sk 1^st DC at the top of the bandana, and place a SC into the 2^nd DC; place a shell stitch into the top space of the project, then a SC into the 1^st DC on the other side; sk 2^nd DC, and place a shell stitch into the first space on this side of the bandana; SC directly into next space to anchor edging down.

* Go directly into next chain space, place 5 DC (=shell); now go directly into next space with a SC. * Repeat from * until you reach last 2 DC on second side (place a shell stitch into the last space before the chain 2 space from previous row); finish shell stitch edging by placing a SC into the last stitch.

Do not fasten off.

Create second tie

Ch 45, slip stitch through second chain from hook, and into each chain across until end of chain.

Slip stitch through the first stitch on project to secure tie to the project.

We will now crochet a SC edging onto the “straight” edge of the bandana (see photograph).

Single Crochet edging

With yarn still attached to project, we will be placing a row of Single Crochets all across the straight edge of the bandana.

There is not a specific amount of SCs that you need to place, however please note that SCs do tend to tighten the project slightly so I recommend placing a lot of SCs.

Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
