Crochet Easy Gingerbread Man Free Pattern: The Inspiration
This crochet design is perfect for the winter season. Indeed, this project is very cute and is my first ever crochet Christmas ornament. I love it and can’t wait to crochet more Christmas ornament designs.
When I first began my crochet journey, I made a few nursery ornaments/designs. I look back with fondness on these earlier crochet patterns. This nursery cushion was my very first crochet free pattern, and it is still one of my favorites to date. The matching nursery hoop decoration was my second design, and it also available for free on my blog and Youtube channel.
I look back with so much tenderness at these designs, as I made them for my soon to be born son. He is now five years old and still treasures these gifts I made for him before he was born.
Crochet Easy Gingerbread Man Free Pattern: A Simple Design
This gingerbread man design is perfect for all seasons. It looks beautiful and is very easy to crochet. This design features two different panels that are stitched together to create the gingerbread man shape.
Once both panels are crocheted, the eyes, cheeks and mouth are added. The red bow is then crocheted and stitched to the front; two front buttons are stitched on the front. Then both the front and back panels are sewed together, along with the stuffing at the same time.
I am definitely going to be crocheting more Christmas ornaments very soon. Let me know in the comments if you want me to makes more ornaments and nursery designs too.

Notes concerning this pattern
For this project, we will start by crocheting the front and the back panels (both are identical).
Once this is completed, we will be making the little red bow.
After this is completed, and before all of our different parts are sewed together, we will be adding the two eyes to the front panel, as well as sewing the blushed cheeks and mouth to the same front panel. We will also be sewing on the two buttons at the front.
After this part is done, we will simply be sewing the front and back panels together and stuffing this little gingerbread man (at the same time).
Begin pattern here
Front and back panels
To start, make a slip knot.
Ch 8
1: HDC into the 3rd ch from the hook, and HDC into each ch across (the first ch 2 counts as a HDC).
2: Ch 1 (=TC), turn your work, HDC into next stitch until eor (including ch 2 from previous row).
3-6: Repeat row 2.
Once you have finished the 6th row, just chain 8.
7: turn your work, and HDC into 2nd chain from hook; place a HDC into each chain across, and once you reach the stitches from row 6, place a HDC into each stitch until eor.
8: Ch 1 (TC), turn your work, HDC into each stitch across until eor.
9-11: Repeat row 8.
Once you have finished row 11, just chain 10.
12: turn your work, and HDC into 2nd chain from hook; place a HDC into each chain across, and once you reach the stitches from row 11, place a HDC into each stitch until eor.
13: Ch 1 (TC), turn your work, HDC into each stitch across until eor.
14: Repeat row 13.
We will be starting on crocheting and shaping the head of the gingerbread man now.
15: Ch 1 (=TC), slip stitch through the first 3 stitches of previous row; ch 2 (=HDC), place a HDC in next 9 stitches.
16: Ch 1 (=TC), turn your work, place 2 HDC together in first stitch; HDC into next stitch until eor, placing 2 HDC together in last stitch.
17-19: Repeat row 16.
20: Ch 1 (=TC), place HDC into first and every stitch across.
21: Repeat row 20.
22: Ch 1 (=TC), sk 1 stitch, HDC into next stitch until eor, leaving last stitch unworked.
23-25: Repeat row 22.
Fasten off.
Create 2nd leg
Attach yarn to the corner stitch at the bottom of project (in direct opposition to the beginning of the 1st leg).
1: Ch 2 (=HDC), place a HDC into next stitch until eor (=7 stitches total).
2: Ch 1 (=TC), turn your work, place HDC into each stitch across until ero.
3-6: Repeat row 2.
Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
Create 2nd arm
Attach yarn to top corner of the gingerbread man (in direct opposition to the 1st arm).
Ch 10.
1: Turn your work, HDC into 2nd and each chain across until you reach the body of gingerbread man. Now slip stitch through the stitch to secure arm onto project.
2-3: Ch 1 (=TC), place a HDC into every stitch until eor.
Once you reach the project again (=body of gingerbread man), slip stitch through stitch so as to secure arm onto project.
Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
Crochet little bow tie
Ch 18, slip stitch to first chain to create a circle making sure you don’t twist your chain.
1: Ch 2 (=HDC), place HDC into each chain across until you reach the first chain 2; slip stitch to close off round.
2: Repeat row 1.
Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
Place your project onto a flat surface, making sure your seam is centered and facing the back.
Take your yarn and go around the center of the bow about 10 times to tighten the bow and create shape. Once you have gone around that number of times, tie a knot onto project and fasten off.
Tidy up all loose ends.
Place eyes into project
Place both eyes symmetrically onto the front panel (on the sixth row from the top), as seen in photograph below.
With pink yarn and tapestry needle, sew your yarn through 4 times on both cheeks to create blush effect.
With yarn in shade Antique White and tapestry needle, sew the mouth of the gingerbread man.
Sew the red bow onto the back of the project
Place the bow on the neck of the gingerbread man, and with tapestry needle, secure the bow onto project.
Now sew both front and back panels together
We will start sewing the front and back panels together at the bottom (starting on any side of a leg).
Sew the two sides in, and once you have reached the other side of the second leg, start stuffing your project in delicately.
Continue to sew and stuff your project as you go along, until you reach the top of the project.
Once you have completed the sewing and stuffing, fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
