Pattern begins here
For this project, we will start by making 5 individual flower Granny Squares. Once all these squares are crocheted, we will be sewing them together to create the initial shape of the headband.
We will then be crocheting the 2 “triangle” edges and ties on each side of the headband.
Flower Granny Square (make 5)
Make a slip knot.
Ch 4, sl st to 1st chain to create a circle into which we will be working.
Note: you can use the magic circle to begin if you prefer.
Round 1: Ch 1 (=SC), place 7 SCs inside the circle you made. Slip stitch to the first ch 1 to close off round (=8 SCs total).
Note: Make sure you fasten in your loose end under your stitches, so that you can pull this loose end to tighten original circle made of 4 chains or magic circle.
Round 2
Ch 3 (=DC), place 2 DCs into the same st (= 3 DCs total in 1st st), ch 1; * 3 DC into next st, ch1, repeat from * until eor. Make sure you finish with a ch 1, sl st to first ch 1 to finish off round.
Round 3
Note: We will be placing this round’s stitches in between the clusters of 3 DCs from previous round (=the petals from previous round).
The term “space” I will be using for this round refers to the chain 1 space between the clusters of 3 DCs from previous round.
Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, place 2 DC, ch 2, 3 DC into space from previous round (=1st corner); [skip next petal from previous round (=3 DC cluster) and go directly into next space with 3 DC together]
*Sk next petal from previous round, go directly into next space with 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (=corner); [sk next petal from previous round and go directly into next space with 3 DC]*; repeat from * to * another two times.
Sl st to first ch 3 to close off round.
Fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
Create headband shape and sewing
Place your 5 squares on a flat surface as follows:
Create “sides” and ties on each side of the headband
Once you have placed your squares as seen in photo above, sew the squares together so as to create a long strip of flower squares. For this part of the project, you should use a piece of yarn and a tapestry needle, and you can use the mattress stitch for this part.
Once you have finished sewing each square together, fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
Crochet the “triangle” sides and ties onto each side of the project
Attach yarn to 1st corner of the headband.
1: Ch 2 (=HDC), place HDC into next stitch until eor (=11 HDC total including ch 2).
2: Ch 1 (=turning chain), turn your work, sl stitch through 2nd st from previous row. Ch 2 (=HDC), place a HDC into next st until you reach the eor, leaving last stitch unworked (please note last stitch is the ch 2 from previous row).
3-7: repeat row 2.
At row 7 you should have only 1 HDC left; now chain 20.
Once you have chained 20, sk the 1st chain and slip stitch through each chain until you reach the HDC from the beginning. Sl st through the top of the HDC to secure hair tie; fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
Repeat this process on the other side of the headband.

For round 2, are we joining after the ch3 and 2dc to get to the first ch1? It’s making it a bit bulky for me to do that so just wanted to check?

Hi! Yes that’s the pattern; however I have quite a loose tension so maybe you need to have a looser tension or add a chain in between each cluster if this helps.
