Crochet French Beret Pattern Free Pattern

Hi everyone, today I am bringing to you a crochet French Beret Pattern free pattern and video tutorial. I absolutely love this new crochet project! Indeed, it is perfect for this weather, and is so feminine, giving off Parisian vibes perfect for the Christmas season.

Crochet French Beret Pattern Free Pattern: the inspiration

I first had the inspiration for crocheting a French beret a while ago. A lovely follower on Youtube suggested the idea, and I thought it was a great idea. I decided to design one on Friday night, as I had a couple of hours to myself to create my next project. The yarn (King Cole’s Super Big Value Super Chunky) was in my current yarn stash, and it suddenly dawned on me this would be perfect for either a traditional beret or Newsboy cap. In the end I designed a crocheted beret, but I will definitely be making the newsboy cap very soon. I just love the versatility of crochet, and all the beautiful things made with our little hands.

This is a traditional French beret

So, in the space of only one hour, a crochet beret design was born. Because this is super chunky yarn, I used a 7 mm crochet hook to make this. Indeed, a 10 mm crochet hook was recommended for this yarn, however, I wanted to give this beret a tightly woven look. And it worked out so well! I have to admit I am very pleased with myself for crocheting this beret. The yarn I used can be substituted easily, and if you check out the details of my pattern down below, you will find out which yarn you can use if you can’t access King Cole’s yarn.

Crochet French Beret Pattern Free Pattern: a traditional Parisian design

This crocheted beret is a traditional Parisian design. Indeed, it is inspired by all the berets I have owned and worn before. It has all the Parisian vibes to it, and has the magic of a traditional French beret. French berets are more often than not simple, with no excessive decorations to them, such as decorative flowers or buttons. The colors worn in France are usually quite neutral, as featured in my design. Being flashy and over the top is definitely not a French trait, and plain, simple and elegant designs and accessories are favored above all else.

This beret is a perfect project for beginners

So I really wanted to respect the French tradition when crocheting this beret. This crochet beret is very cozy and warm too, which is a hug bonus! I love how beautiful it looks, and I hope you enjoy making this project as much as I did!

Created from a simple circle made from Double Crochets, a row of Single Crochets is later added to give the beret it’s traditional shape. Once this is done, a simple row of Double Crochets is added again to finish off the project. And voila, your French beret is made! This is also a perfect Christmas present for a loved one. Because it is crocheted so fast, it is perfect if you have last minute gifts you need to make. It will be so loved and cherished too, if you made this for a friend or member of your family.

Let me know in the comments if you created your very own beret, I would love to know!

Crochet French Beret Pattern Free Pattern: a Vintage Crochet Series Project

This traditional beret is part of my Vintage Crochet Series. Indeed, this beret is typical of the 1940s French fashion. Although berets are still very much in fashion in France, and always have been, this crochet project is indeed typical of the 1930s and 1940s in France. The traditional beret was extremely popular in this era, as hats and head covers were part of everyday wear across the world.

This beret is very elegant and chic

Often, the traditional beret was slightly more casually worn than a hat during that time. It was meant for everyday wear during the cold Winter months, and looked absolutely stunning matched with a lovely warm coat and dress. Often, films and TV shows which take place during the Second World War feature the traditional French beret, as it was indeed the most popular hat that women wore during that era.

It is important to note thought that berets have never really been out of fashion in France. These are still worn a lot, again in neutral and elegant colors. If you enjoy this era, and French designs, you can check out this French 1940s wrap, called La Jolie Bretonne Wrap. You will definitely love the vintage vibes of this beautiful shawl inspired by one of my favorite films!
