Crochet Granny Square Headband Free Pattern: The Design
This new crochet headband features the classic granny square. As you may know, I love crocheted squares, and I have made new and unique crochet square designs this past year. However, there definitely is something special about the classic granny square.
This versatile square is perfect for this new headband pattern. Last year, I designed the very popular Lovely Flower Square Headband. This project is one of my favorite to date, and I do love the fact that it also features three different colors.
A few weeks ago I released The Buttercup Flower Headband design, and I do love it so much! It features a unique and slightly smaller square, that looks beautiful when featured in a headband. This unique flower headband is also a very feminine crochet hairband to make. Indeed, it features a unique and lovely daisy granny square crocheted with three different colors.
All these designs are perfect for the warmer months. I love these designs, and these designs really stand the test of time as granny squares are timeless.
Crochet Granny Square Headband Free Pattern: The Yarn
For this project I did use Lion Brand Coboo yarn. This yarn is so soft and beautiful; it is made from 51% cotton and 49% bamboo. I love this yarn and have used it many times before.
The Pastel Patchwork Cardigan from a few months ago is crocheted with this yarn; this cardigan is very stylish and lightweight, perfect for the warmer months. It is very delicate, due to the design but also the yarn.
This romantic headband looks beautiful also. It is lightweight and very delicate, crocheted also with the same yarn. The Delicate Rose Hair Bow is so perfect also! I love it and it also is made with this yarn. Last week I created a new hair bow design, featuring a filet crochet design. All these projects are made using this yarn, creating the most lovely and feminine crochet accessories perfect for Spring and Summer.

Pattern begins here
For this project, we will start by making 65 individual Granny Squares. Once all these squares are crocheted, we will be sewing them together to create the initial shape of the headband.
We will then be crocheting the 4 hair ties (one on each corner of the headband).
Flower Granny Square (make 5)
Make a slip knot.
To start, make a slip knot.
Ch 4, sl st through 1st stitch to form a ring.
1: Ch 3 (=DC throughout), 2 DC inside ring; [ch 2, 3 DC] inside ring 3 more times, ch 2, sl st to beginning ch 3.
2: Ch 3, turn your work, 2 DC into same space, ch 2, 3 DC inside ch sp from previous row (= 3DC, ch 2, 3DC which forms a corner). [Go directly into next sp, 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC] 3 more times. Sl st to first 3 ch to join round.
3: Ch 3, turn your work, 2 DC inside space (=3 DC). [Go directly into next sp with 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (=corner); 3 DC into the next space] 3 times. In last space place 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (corner). Sl st to close off round.
Create headband shape and sewing
Place your 5 squares on a flat surface as follows:
Once you have placed your squares as seen in photo above, sew the squares together so as to create a long strip of granny squares. For this part of the project, you should use a piece of yarn and a tapestry needle, and you can use the mattress stitch for this part.
Once you have finished sewing each square together, fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
Create 4 hair ties (one on each corner of headband)
Attach yarn to first corner of the headband.
Now chain 40; now sk the 1st chain and slip stitch through 2nd chain and each chain until you reach the end of the chain. Once you have finished slip stitching through each chain, slip stitch through the corner space on the headband (where we began). Fasten off and tidy up loose ends.
Repeat process on the 3 other corners of the headband.
