This scrunchie features a lovely textured fabric made entirely with half double crochet stitches, giving it a soft appearance while keeping the pattern wonderfully simple. The use of medium weight Aran yarn also makes this a quick project with plenty of texture and volume. This crochet headband I designed a few weeks ago is also a great project for the Summer season.

If you’re looking for a crochet project that can be completed in a short amount of time, this scrunchie is a great choice. It is worked around a standard elastic hair tie, allowing the crochet fabric to gather beautifully and create that classic scrunchie shape. The half double crochet stitch is particularly well suited to this project because it creates a fabric that is soft and flexible without being too open or lacy.

Crochet Lovely Scrunchie Free Pattern: A Simple Yarn, A Stunning Result

The finished scrunchie has a lovely handmade look while still being practical enough for everyday use. For this crochet scrunchie, you will need medium weight 4/Aran yarn, a crochet hook suitable for your yarn (I chose a 5 mm crochet hook), a standard elastic hair tie, a yarn needle, and a pair of scissors.

For this project, I used Hobbii Twister XL yarn, that I had already used for this lovely shell stitch bandana from a few weeks ago. If you do not have this yarn, you can substitute it with Lion Brand Feels Like Butta yarn.  You can make your scrunchie in a single color, like the soft cream shade shown here, or experiment with different colors to match your wardrobe. It would also be a lovely project for using up leftover balls of yarn.

The main stitch used for this scrunchie is the half double crochet (hdc). Half double crochet is one of my favorite stitches for quick accessories because it works up faster than a single crochet while still creating a beautifully textured fabric. It also gives the scrunchie enough body to create those lovely gathered folds around the elastic.

I love how versatile crochet scrunchies are. They are small enough to keep in your handbag, but they can completely transform a simple hairstyle. They also make wonderful handmade gifts and are perfect for craft fairs, stocking stuffers, or little gifts for friends and family. You could make a whole collection in different colors and textures, creating a scrunchie for every outfit or season.

The cream color of this particular scrunchie gives it a soft, romantic and timeless feel, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Pastels would be beautiful for spring, warm earthy shades would be perfect for autumn, and bright colors would make fun summer accessories.

Materials

1 skein of Hobbii Twister Solid XL (this can be substituted for Lion Brand Feels Like Butta yarn or any of your preferred aran/medium yarn)

A 5 mm crochet hook

A simple elastic

Tapestry needle

A pair of scissors

Safety Pins (optional)

Abbreviations

Ch: Chain

St: Stitch

Sl st: Slip stitch

HDC: Half Double Crochet (UK Half Treble Crochet)

EOR: End of round

Start pattern here

Make a slip knot, and ch 15.

1: HDC into 3^rd ch from hook, and into every ch until eor (first ch 2=HDC).

2: Ch 2 (=HDC), turn your work, HDC into next stitch until eor.

3-44: repeat row 2.

Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.

Sew the project around the elastic band

Place the project around and inside the elastic band, trying to spread it out evenly and symmetrically (see photographs below).

Now fold this project over and sew both seams together using the mattress stitch (see photograph below).

Sew your project in with the loose end and tapestry needle, using the mattress stitch.

Once you have gone all the way around, sew vertical seam to finish off project as seen in photograph below.

Fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
