Crochet Patchwork Cardigan Free Pattern: A Classic Design
Two years ago, I created this feminine patchwork cardigan; this crochet cardigan features two pastel colors that look stunning when crocheted into granny squares. Patchwork cardigans are so pretty and go with so many different outfits too!
For this project, I created two different sizes: size S/M and size L/XL. I hope you enjoy this new pattern! It was so much fun to create a new patchwork design. For once, I did not use pastel colors. I felt that the overall grey and black colors of this cardigan made it a more classic and elegant design.

I love a classic granny square design, and I cannot wait to create more square projects going forward. Indeed, nothing says “crochet” quite like a granny square! Patchwork cardigans are such versatile and feminine projects to make and wear, and I do hope you enjoy this new design.
Crochet Patchwork Cardigan Free Pattern: The Yarn
A few months ago, I filmed a video testing the yarn Red Heart All In One by Yarnspirations. In this video, I crocheted a granny square with this automatic color changing yarn. This was such a fun challenge as I was able to crochet lots of granny squares without having to fasten yarn off and on. Indeed, this yarn changes color automatically so as to create the perfect granny square with five different colors.

I loved this yarn so much, and ended up crocheting lots and lots of squares. After I finished all of these squares, I decided to create a cardigan with these. I hope you enjoy this project!
Once I had finished these squares, I decided to add some rounds to makes them larger. I crocheted two extra rows onto each square with Red Heart Super Saver yarn in shade black. Once this was done, I fashioned each square so as to create this wonderful patchwork cardigan/jacket.

General Pattern Notes
We will be crocheting a required number of granny squares as indicated below for each size.
The sizes for this project are as follows: S/M and L/XL. This is because of the fact that this crochet cardigan is made out of granny squares which are stitched together.
Once we have crocheted all the required squares depending on the size you are making, these will be sewed together to create the back panel, the front panel, and 2 identical sleeves.
We will then sew all the different parts to create the cardigan, before adding the sleeve cuff edging, bottom edging, and front opening edging.
The yarn we are using for this project changes color automatically, so you will not need to change colors from row to row.
For size S/M, there will be a larger gap at the front opening of the cardigan; this is due to the number of squares necessary for the project.
There will be no gap at all when placing the front and back panels onto each other for sizes L/XL.
Number of granny squares required per size
Size S/M: 23 granny squares
Size L/XL: 48 granny squares

Begin pattern here
Granny square pattern (make the number indicated above)
To start, make a slip knot with silver yarn.
Ch 4, sl st through 1st stitch to form a ring.

Fasten off All In One Square yarn, and attach Super Saver yarn in shade black.
Round 6

7: Ch 3, turn your work, [Go directly into next sp with 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (=corner); 3 DC into next five spaces] 3 times. In last space place 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC (corner). Sl st to close off round.
Fasten off, tidy up your loose ends.
Now sew your squares together to create the back panel, front panels, and 2 sleeves as follows for each size:
Size S/M
Place all of your squares as indicated in the photo below so as to create the back panel, the front panels and the sleeves:

The back panel features 9 squares, the front panel features 2 fronts made of 3 squares each, and each sleeve contains 4 squares each.
Sew all of these squares together using a tapestry needle and a piece of yarn. Use the mattress stitch for this part.
Now fold over your project to create the cardigan shape, as seen in the photo below. Sew the bottom seam of each sleeve, and sew each side of the cardigan too.

Fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
Size L/XL
For size L/XL, we will be placing our squares so as to create a back and front panels separately. We will sew squares together for each panel; once this is done, we will be placing the front panel on top of the back panel and sewing these together to create the cardigan.
Back panel
On a flat surface, place 24 squares so as to have 4 squares across 4 vertical columns. We will also place four squares on each side of the top of the back panel to create sleeves. Please consult photo below for this part.

Sew squares together to create back panel using the mattress stitch, or your preferred stitch.
Once you have sewed all the squares together, sew in all your loose ends.
Front panels (create 2 identical front panels)
On a flat surface, place 16 squares so as to have 8 squares across 2 vertical columns (x2), as seen in photo below:

Sew squares together to create front panels using the mattress stitch, or your preferred stitch.
Once you have sewed all the squares together, sew in all your loose ends, please add 4 squares on each side to create the sleeves (symmetrically to the back panel).
To sew your cardigan together for size L/XL
Sew front and back panel together:
With wrong side facing, place your back panel onto a flat surface. Place your 2 front panels symmetrically straight across the back panels, making sure that each top and bottom corner on the outside touch each other (the top and bottom corners of the back and front panels).
There will be no gap at all when placing the front and back panels onto each other for sizes L/XL.
Start sewing the shoulder seams straight across.

Sew squares together to create front panels using the mattress stitch, or your preferred stitch.

Start sewing the shoulder seams straight across.
Add sleeve cuff edging (repeat process on both sleeve cuffs); for sizes S/M and L/XL
Attach black yarn to first sleeve end (attach yarn to any stitch on the sleeve end).
1: Ch 1 (counts as a SC), sk one stitch. [Place a SC into next stitch, sk a stitch] until eor. Sl stitch to first ch 1 to close round.
2: Ch 2 (=HDC), turn your work, HDC into next st until eor. Sl st to first ch 2 to close off round.
3-4: Repeat row 2.
Fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
Add border to the front opening of the cardigan and bottom edging of cardigan (size S/M only):
Attach yarn to the front opening of the cardigan; attach yarn to the first stitch at the bottom of either side of the front opening.
1: Ch 1 (=SC), place a SC into next stitch until eor all the way around the front of cardigan, until you reach the other side of the front opening. Make sure you place a SC evenly all across the front opening as there may not always be an actual stitch into which you will place each SC across this edge.
2: Ch 2 (=HDC), turn your work, place a HDC into each SC from previous row until eor.
3-4: repeat row 2.
Do not fasten off, as we will be adding the bottom edging directly.
Turn your work so as to work a Single Crochet edging on the bottom of the cardigan.
Row 1 of bottom edging: ch 1 (=TC), place a SC into each stitch until eor.
