Crochet Pearly Shell Prayer Shawl Free Pattern: A 1950s Inspired Design

This crochet prayer shawl is very feminine. It features a simple yet stunning shell stitch design, as well as a single crochet edging. It is part of my Vintage Crochet Series. This new crochet prayer shawl design features a unique shell stitch design.

This prayer shawl is inspired by the 1950s

I love vintage crochet shawls, as they are always both beautiful and feminine. This new design is very demure, and it can be crocheted by beginners too. This shell stitch shawl is inspired by a shawl from the 1950s. Crocheted using a 5 mm hook, this shawl features a simple shell stitch that is built from the top down.

The 1950s were famous for popularizing the shell stitch, especially for shawls. Indeed, shell stitch shawls were the most popular during this era. I love this stitch and absolutely wanted to recreate my own version of a 1950s shawl. Please let me know in the comments if you enjoy this project!

Crochet Pearly Shell Prayer Shawl Free Pattern: The Yarn

For this project, I used Bernat Softee Baby yarn. This is a beautiful 100% acrylic DK/Light 3 yarn. This yarn is very delicate and pleasant to work with. The Rose Whisper Shawl from last year was also made with this yarn. It definitely is one of my favorite yarns to work with, as it is so versatile.

The shade Antique White that I use here is one of my favorite to date. I have used this shade many times, especially for borders and edgings (for example for shawls and baby blankets). Indeed, I love this yarn and can’t wait to work with it again!

I love these crochet shawls so much, and I am so excited to release many more vintage crochet shawls in the coming months. One of the highlights of the Autumn/Winter season is the creation of many crochet designs perfect for the colder months!

8-29: Repeat rows 6 and 7 (alternating them), making sure you add your shells as your shawl grows wider by following this simple pattern explained above.

Do not fasten off.

Shell stitch edging

Ch 1, turn your work, place a SC into the first stitch and each stitch across. Please be mindful that this is the wrong side of the stitches (ie the row stitch), so you will need to place these SCs evenly across both sides of the V of the shawl so as to not tighten the project. At the top of the V (where there is the chain 2 spaces at the top of the V from row to row), you will be placing 3 SCs together in the chain 2 space.
