This new shawl pattern is both beautiful and feminine. It features a simple yet stunning triangle shape, and a very dainty edging. This crochet shawl is inspired by the fashion of the European Era. I am referring to the European Victorian fashion era because this type of wool shawl were popular across Europe during the 19th Century.

This shawl is so feminine

Recently I watched a period drama called “Beauty And The Beast” on Amazon, and the main character Belle is seen wearing a feminine pink fine wool shawl at the beginning. This put me in mind of the shawl worn by Fantine in Les Miserables (the BBC mini series from 2018).

The Fantine Shawl is inspired by the shawl worn by Fantine in this production of my favorite book. This shawl features a soft pink color and also a triangular shape. The Romantic period in France (both in fashion and literary circles) is my favorite. I love everything about it! I am so pleased to be bringing to you a new design inspired by this era.

The Vintage Crohet Series is so beautiful and it is one of my favorite projects to make. These patterns are unique in that they are directly inspired by times gone by. I love history and fashion, and I actually hold a Master’s Degree in History of Art (I specialized in Romantic 19th Century French painting). This gives me a great background for my research concerning these vintage crochet patterns.

For this crochet shawl, I used a lovely angora yarn in a fingering weight. This fine yarn is absolutely heaven to use. Indeed, this yarn is called Papatya Angora yarn, and it is made from 80% acrylic and 20% merino wool. It is both beautiful and warm, perfect for a light weight feminine Winter wrap.

You can substitute this yarn with your favorite yarn of a fingering or light 3/DK weight of your preference. Let me know if you crochet this shawl with this yarn or a different yarn.

Pattern

To start, make a slip knot.

1: Ch 5, HDC into 3rd chain from hook, HDC into next 2 st, 2 HDC into last chain.

2: Ch.2 (counts as your 1st HDC), turn your work, HDC into same 1st stitch (=2 HDC together), HDC into each st along, 2 HDC into last st.

3-106: Repeat row 2.

Do not fasten off.

Shell Stitch Edging

For this part you will be placing the 2 rows of the double loop edging across the 2 longer sides of the shawl that form the V shape.

Row 1:
Ch 1 (=turning chain), turn your work, place a SC into 1st stitch; place 205 SC across the first side of the V of the shawl.
Please make sure that you are placing these SC evenly across this edge as this is the row side of the stitches (so there will not be a clear stitch into which you will be placing your stitches).

Once you reach to top of the shawl (the point at the top of the V), turn your project so as to work 205 stitches across the second side of the edging.

Row 2:

Note: you will be going around both sides of the V where we have just placed the SC.

Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, place 2 DC into same 1st stitch (=half shell stitch).

[Sk 2 st, SC into next st, sk 2 st, place 5 DC into next st (=shell stitch)] until you reach the last 6 stitches before the end of the row; sk 2 st, SC, sk 2 st, place 3 DC into the last stitch (=half shell stitch).

Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
