Crochet The Pretty Prism Shawl Free Pattern

Hi everyone, crochet The Pretty Prism Shawl (free pattern) with the full tutorial available on my blog. I am so pleased to be releasing this new installment in the Vintage Crochet Series. Indeed, this lovely and delicate design is very special to me, and I really enjoyed making it.

The video tutorial for this project can be found here:

Crochet The Pretty Prism Shawl Free Pattern: The Inspiration

The inspiration for this project is actually one of my earliest patterns called The Rainbow Shawl. It’s hard to believe that I released this pattern almost five years ago! I remember how happy I was to have created this beautiful shawl, and actually made a video tutorial and free written pattern of it too.

This shawl is so feminine

Today I really wanted to update and improve the original pattern, so here we are. Let me know what you think of this new and improved design. I love it so much! Like the original “Rainbow” shawl, the Pretty Prism Shawl features a triangle granny pattern. I love the triangle granny pattern so much for shawls and wraps. Actually, I love all versions of the granny stitch! This is one of many variations of the granny stitch that is so perfect for many projects.

I also used the same yarn as the original design. Indeed, for this project I also used Mandala Baby yarn by Lion Brand Yarns. This light 3/DK weight yarn is so lovely, perfect for a shawl or baby blanket. This color variation (called Diagon Alley) is perfect if you love pastel colors like me!

Crochet The Pretty Prism Shawl Free Pattern: A Delicate Edging

For this shawl, I wanted to crochet a delicate edging to match the delicacy of the shawl. I chose to create a shell stitch edging with a little twist. I hope you enjoy this original take on the shell stitch edging. To be honest, shell stitch edgings are often my go to for a crochet project as they add such an elevated and whimsical detail to most patterns.

This crochet shawl is so pretty!

A shell stitch is also quite simple to crochet. Also, the shell stitch can be crocheted in a myriad of variations too, just like the granny stitch. This makes this edging very versatile, perfect for a lot of crochet items.

For the Pretty Prism Shawl, I decided to continue using Lion Brand’s Mandala Baby yarn. Sometimes I enjoy using a different color for the edging of my project, but for this pattern I thought it would look nicer with the same yarn. Let me know what you think of this! This easy baby blanket is a great example of using a different color for the border (contrasting with the main part of the project).

To begin

To start, make a slip knot.

Ch 4, sl st through 1st chain to form a ring.

1: Ch 4 (=DC + ch space), 3 DC in the ring; ch 2, 3 DC in the ring; ch 1, 1DC. Make sure you work your loose end as you place your stitches into the ring (so as to pull this loose end and close off ring one you have finished your shawl).

Row 1
Row 1

2: Turn your work; ch 4 (1 DC + ch space); in first chain space from previous row, place 3 DC and ch 1; going directly into the next space (which is also the center), place 3 DC, ch 2, 3 DC, ch 1; in next ch space, 3 DC, ch 1, 1 DC.

Do not fasten off.

Create shell stitch border

We will be creating the shell stitch border on the β€œV” sides of the wrap.

Ch 1 (=does not count as a stitch), turn your work, ch 3 (=DC) and place 2 DC into the 1st chain space from the previous row (the 3 DCs count as a half shell stitch).

*Skip next cluster of 3 DCs from previous row and go directly into the next chain space; place a SC into this space.

Skip next cluster of 3 DCs from previous row and go directly into the next chain space, and place 5 DCs into this space**; repeat from * to ** until last chain space (please go across both sides of the β€œV” part of the shawl).

Once you reach the last space on the second side of the β€œV”, place 3 DCs into this space (=half shell stitch).

place a SC into next stitch until you reach the center part of the V shawl, where you will be placing 4 SC into the center ch 2 sp from previous row. Place a SC into next stitch until you reach the eor.

Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
