This new crochet capelet is definitely a labor of love. Indeed, this capelet is one of my favorite projects to date, as it features so many of my favorite things: a delicate feminine design, a shell stitch edging and the griddle stitch.

This is such a feminine pattern

This capelet is part of my Vintage Crochet Series. I love crocheting vintage crochet patterns, and this new capelet design is very demure and inspired by the 19th Century. Capelets were very popular design in the nineteenth century. This accessory consists of a small cape wrapped around the shoulders, usually attached at the front with ties or a little button.

This new crochet design is so pretty and delicate. It is crocheted with a beautiful Lion Brand Ice Cream yarn in shade Ice Cream, and a 4.5 mm crochet hook. This capelet features a rectangular shape and shell stitch edging, and comes in different sizes too. Please check the sizes below to see which size you need to crochet.

For the main part of the capelet, I used the griddle stitch. I used this textured stitched for this vintage clutch bag. Indeed, this stitch can be used for so many different projects, including little accessories. I also used this stitch for the classic man scarf I crocheted a few years ago.

Let me know in the comments if you have ever used this stitch before. This rectangular capelet is so simple to crochet, as it is made from a very simple design that forms the main part of the project. Once this crochet rectangle is made, a dainty and feminine shell stitch is added. Two ties at the top (collar) are crocheted once the capelet has been made.

This is a great project for all seasons

This little capelet is very feminine, and is inspired by the Edwardian Era. The Edwardian era refers to the period from 1901 to 1910 in England. Capelets in this era were dainty and on the shorter side, just like this crochet project.

Abbreviations

EOR: End of row/end of round

To begin

Ch 129, (146), [163]

1: Place a SC into 2nd ch from hook (first ch 1 counts as a SC), [DC into next ch, SC into next ch] until eor, finishing your row on a DC.

2: Ch 1 (=SC), turn your work, DC into next st, [SC into next st, DC into next st] until eor, finishing your row on a DC.

Do not fasten off.

Shell stitch border

Row 1 (make sure you place enough SC so as to have a multiple of 5):

Ch 1 (=SC), place a SC evenly all across the first side of the cape. When you reach the 1st corner, place 2 SC together in the corner. Turn your work so as to work on the next side of the project, and place a SC all across this side evenly until you reach the 2nd corner. Place 2 SC into the corner. Repeat this process until you have gone all the way across the four sides of your cape.

When you reach the first ch 1, sl st through this chain to close off round; you will now crochet your first tie in this corner.

Ch 45; slip stitch through 2nd chain from hook until you reach the end of the chain, slip stitch through project so as to secure 1st tie.

Shell stitch edging

Now we will be crocheting the second stitch across the next three sides of the project, so that the shell stitch edging will be across both sides and bottom of the project.

Once we have finished these three sides, you will crochet the second tie.

Row 2 (across 3 sides of the project): Ch 1 (=SC), skip 2 stitches, place 5 DC into next stitch (=shell stitch); [sk 2 stitches, SC into next stitch, sk 2 stitches, 5 DC into next stitch] until you reach the last 3 stitches; sk 2 stitches, place a SC into the last stitch.

Fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
