Hi everyone, today I am bringing to you this crochet Vintage Prayer Shawl (free pattern). This is a very simple yet stunning design, perfect for all seasons. This crochet shawl is perfect if you are a beginner or expert crocheters, and looks beautiful in all circumstances.

Crochet Vintage Prayer Shawl Free Pattern: The Inspiration

This crochet shawl is a typical vintage prayer shawl design. It features a simple design and two different colors. Crocheted in two very feminine and soft colors, this shawl features a Corner To Corner stitch (C2C). It also features a simple shell stitch design in a soft and gentle pink shade. 

Last week, I released the Edwardian Alice Shawl and it was a huge hit! I have recently really loved crocheting shawls and wraps, especially vintage inspired ones. These designs are unique and stunning, and I just love them! 

For this shawl I used DK/Light 3 yarn. I used British yarn I had from a few years ago for this shawl, but this can easily be substituted. You can use Paintbox yarn in shades Misty Gray (3 balls) and Candy Floss (1 ball). If you want, you can crochet this shawl with any of your preferred yarn in this category.

Crochet Vintage Prayer Shawl Free Pattern: The Design

This design is unique yet simple. This new design is very pretty and is inspired by one of my older designs, the Back To The 80s Shawl. Indeed, this shawl has always been one of my favorite projects ever, and I made it in 2020. I designed to redesign this older pattern, and I am so pleased with the result! The main part of this shawl is crocheted with the C2C stitch. A shell stitch edging is then added in the pink shade after the shawl is made. This crochet pattern is perfect in all seasons, and it is very delicate and soft too.

Gauge

4” (10 cm) x 4” (10 cm): 5 rows of C2C pattern

Size of finished shawl (including border)

70 cm (27,5”) x 155 cm (61”)

You will need

3 skeins of Paintbox Simply DK in shade Misty Grey

1 skein of Paintbox Simply DK in shade Candy Floss

A 5 mm crochet hook

A pair of scissors

A tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Ch: chain

Sl st: slip stitch

St: stitch

Sk: skip

SC: Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)

DC: Double Crochet (UK Treble Crochet)

EOR: End of Row

To begin

To start, make a slip knot.

1: Ch 6, DC in 4^th ch from the hook and in each st along (=4 DC).

2: Ch 6, turn your work, DC in 4^th ch from hook and in each st along (=4 DC); turn work to sl st in between the 3^rd and 4^th DC from the previous row; ch 3 (counts as a DC throughout), and add 3 DC in between the 3^rd and 4^th DC from the previous row to form a square.

3: Ch 6, turn your work, DC in 4th ch from hook, DC in each st along (=4 DC); sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th DC; ch 3 (=DC), and add 3 DC in that space, sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th DC. Ch 3 (=DC), and add 3 DC in that space, sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th DC.

4-49: repeat row 3, adding the required number of squares as you go along.

Fasten off.

Create shell stitch edging

You will be creating a shell stitch edging all along the “V” of your shawl with shade Candy Floss.

To begin, for row 1 of this border, we will be placing Single Crochets all across the “V” (2 sides) of your shawl. This is the wrong side of the stitches (=the row side), so you will need to place these SCs evenly all across these edges.

There isn’t a specific amount of SCs that needs to be placed across the border, however the total number of SCs needs to be a multiple of 7.

Attach yarn in shade Candy Floss to the stitch where we fastened off.

1: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn your work, and place SC along the first side of the “V” of the wrap. Place another SC along the other side of the “V” (= SC total).

2: ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), ]sk 3 stitches, place 7 DCs into next st, sk 3 stitches, SC into next stitch] until last 4 stitches; sk 3 stitches, place 3 DCs into last stitch (half shell stitch).

Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
