This shawl captures the graceful spirit of the early 1900s through its airy openwork design and refined feminine details. Level: Easy

Gauge

4” (10 cm): 16 stitches

4” (10 cm): 7 rows

Size of finished project (including lacy flower border)

17” x 67” (43 cm x 170 cm)

Materials

2 skeins of James C Brett Super Soft Baby Double Knit (400 grams) or 2 skeins of Bernat Softee Baby in shade Pink

A 4 mm crochet hook

A tapestry needle

Pair of scissors

A measuring tape (optional)

Abbreviations

I will be writing in US terms (British terms in brackets)

Ch: chain

Sk: skip

SP: space

Sl st: Slip stitch

Ch sp: chain space

DC: Double Crochet (UK Treble Crochet)

SC: Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)

EOR: End of row/end of round

Pattern

Ch 49

1: DC in 4^th chain from hook (first 3 ch counts as a DC), DC into next ch until eor.

2: Ch 4 (=DC+ch 1), turn your work, sk a stitch, DC into next stitch until eor; [ch 1, sk 1 stitch, DC into next stitch] until eor.

3: Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, DC into next stitch until eor (including chain spaces from previous row).

4-103: Repeat rows 2 and 3.

Do not fasten off.

Flower lace edging

We will be crocheting this edging all across the shawl (4 sides).

1: Ch 1 (=does not count as a stitch), and place SCs all along the first “side” of the shawl; once you reach the corner, place 2 SCs together before turning your project sideways and placing SCs all along the second “side” of the shawl.

Repeat this process of placing SCs all along the four sides of the shawl, making sure you space them evenly as you go along. Always place 2 SC into each corner of the project.

Note: you will need to place 550 SCs in total, OR a number of SCs that is a multiple of 11.

Once you place your last SC into the project, slip stitch under the first SC at beginning of round.

2: Ch 3 (=DC), DC into each and every SC across all four sides of the shawl (=550 DC in total); slip stitch under first DC at the beginning to close off round.

Round 3

3: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), SC into first stitch; * ch 9, slip stitch through 3^rd ch from hook, ch 7, skip 10 stitches, SC into next stitch *; repeat from * to end; slip stitch under 1^st stitch at beginning of round to close off round.

4: Ch 5; work 1^st flower into circle space from previous round

; [* yarn over, go into space, pull up a loop, go through 2 loops only (leaving DC unfinished) *; repeat from * until * two more times; now yarn over and go through all 4 loops left on your hook; chain 5].

Now repeat from [until] 2 more times; place a DC into the SC from previous round.

Repeat this process all around the shawl; slip stitch under the 1^st to finish off round.

Fasten off and tidy up all loose ends.
