Crochet Vintage Sontag Shawl Free Pattern
Crochet Vintage American Shawl Free Pattern
Hi everyone, today I am bringing to you this crochet Vintage American Shawl (free pattern). This crochet project is both feminine and practical, as it features ties on either side of the shawl to secure it. Crocheted with chunky yarn, this shawl is perfect for the cooler months.
The video tutorial for this project can be found here:
Crochet Vintage American Shawl Free Pattern: A Vintage Crochet Project
This crochet pattern is inspired by the 19th century design called a “sontag”. This style of wrap was very popular not only in the 19th century, but also in times prior. However, today we will be drawing inspiration from this era’s sontag design, also known as a bossom friend.
This lovely design features a delicate V shape and a simple border. It also features long ties that are added at the end of the project, so as to tie this wrap securely around the body. For this project, these ties can be tied either once or twice around the body depending on your preference.
A few years ago, I crocheted this lovely and feminine sontag, inspired by the Renaissance. This crochet shawl also features a triangular shape and ties to secure it around myself. Songtags were particularly popular in Europe, as well as America.
Crochet Vintage American Shawl Free Pattern: A Delicate Shawl
When I crocheted this unique shawl, I had a photo in mind that I had once seen of an American Civil War wrap I had once seen. This very old photograph struck me, and from that point forward I really wanted to recreate a shawl inspired by those chaotic times.
The American Civil War took place from 1861 to 1865. I want to clarify that this wrap is inspired by this era (mid 19th century), rather than the war itself. Indeed, I hope you enjoy this new Vintage Crochet Series installment dedicated to one of my favorite countries, the United States of America.
Let me know if you enjoy this simple yet unique vintage crochet shawl. I love the Vintage Crochet Series, and can’t wait to design more patterns for all of you!

Abbreviations

SC: Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)
HDC: Half Double Crochet (UK Half Treble Crochet)
TC: Treble crochet (UK Double Treble Crochet)

To begin
To start, make a slip knot.
1: Ch 7, TC in 5th ch from the hook and in each st along (=4 TC).
2: Ch 7, turn work, TC in 5h ch from hook and in each st along (=4 TC); turn work to sl st in between the 3rd and 4th TC from the previous row; ch 4 (counts as a TC throughout), and add 3 TC in between the 3rd and 4th TC from the previous row to form a square.
3: Ch 7, turn your work, TC in 5th ch from hook, TC in each st along (=4 TC); sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th TC; ch 4 (=TC), and add 3 TC in that space, sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th TC. Ch 4 (=TC), and add 3 TC in that space, sl st to previous square in between 3rd and 4th TC.
4-25: repeat row 3, adding the required number of squares as you go along.
Fasten off shade Deep Fuschia.
Single Crochet & Half Double Crochet Border
We will be placing the border across the 2 sides that forms the “V” shape of the shawl (see photos of project).
Attach yarn in shade Blush to the same stitch where we fastened off shade Deep Fuschia.
Row 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch), turn your work, place a SC all across the edge of the shawl until you reach the top of the “V”.
Once you reach the top “V” of the shawl, place 2 SC into this top stitch.
Now go down the other side of the “V” with SCs once again.
Note concerning row 1:
There is not a specific number of SCs you need to place; this is the wrong side of the stitches, so just make sure you place all the SC evenly so as not to “tighten” the project.
Row 2: Ch 2 (=HDC), turn your work, place a HDC into next stitch until eor.
Row 3: repeat row 2.
Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
Create a tie on each side of the wrap
Attach yarn in shade Deep Fuschia on the first corner of the shawl; now ch 100.
Once you have chained 100, slip stitch through the 2nd and each chain until the end of chain. Slip stitch through a stitch on the project to secure the tie.
Fasten off yarn and repeat process on the other side of the shawl.
Tidy up all loose ends.
