Crochet The Valentina Shawl Free Pattern

Hi everyone, this week I am bringing to you the Crochet Valentina Shawl free pattern. This new project is perfect for beginners, and looks beautiful in all seasons. This week is Valentine’s Day week, and I decided to create a project which was bright and sunny. I also called this new crochet wrap The Valentina Shawl. Indeed, I love the name Valentina and thought it would be appropriate for this project.

Crochet The Valentina Shawl Free Pattern: the inspiration

For this project, I used one skein of Lion Brand’s Mandala Baby yarn in shade Narnia. This yarn is absolutely stunning, and I had ordered it a few weeks ago, and I could not wait to create a wrap with it. I knew instantly when I saw this beautiful variegated yarn that I wanted to create a classic shawl with a frilly edging. I love frilly edgings so much on wraps, as they look very feminine.

The last time I used this yarn was for crocheting The Polina Half Circle Wrap. I do love this yarn as it is so uplifting and soothing to see building up. Let me know if you have used this yarn before too! It definitely reminds me of vintage crochet shawls which were bright and vivid.

It is quite possible a new vintage crochet project will be coming soon! In the meantime, here is shawl with whimsical colors that I hope will also inspire and put you in a good mood. So this project is a little piece of Eastern European inspired heaven.

Crochet The Valentina Shawl Free Pattern: the design

The pattern for this shawl is quite simple. I used a slight twist on the C2C pattern to create the main part of the shawl. Indeed, it is in fact a C2C pattern that is used for this project, as explained below in the pattern section. However, it is not a simple Double Crochet which is crocheted in this pattern, but a Treble Crochet. So this colorful wrap is made using a C2C treble crochet repeat pattern, which gives this pattern a very fine and delicate finish.

Once the main part of the shawl is done, a beautiful frilly edging is added. I only needed one skein of yarn for this project, which actually really surprised me. The wrap is definitely quite wide. Therefore, I am very happy with the whole fact that I only needed one skein. After the main part is done, you just need to fasten on the cream yarn and start your frilly edging.

This very simple pattern is perfect for relaxing by a cozy fire. It is very easy and repetitive, yet it is still a stunning wrap. I love the mix of a simple pattern repeat with a stunning yarn and elaborate edging. This creates a very beautiful piece without too much complications.

Crochet The Valentina Shawl: the Pattern

Notes: I will be using US terms (British terms in brackets)

Gauge

4” (10 cm): 4 rounds of C2C pattern

Size of finished shawl (including border)

31” (79 cm) x 69” (175 cm)

You will need

1 skein of Lion Brand’s Mandala Baby yarn in shade Narnia

1 skein of Paintbox Simple DK in shade Champagne White

5 mm crochet hook

Pair of scissors

Tapestry needle

Stitch marker

Abbreviations

Ch: chain

Sl st: slip stitch

SC: Single Crochet (UK Double Crochet)

DC: Double Crochet (UK Treble Crochet)

TC: Treble crochet (UK Double Treble)

EOR: End of Row

To begin

To start, make a slip knot.

Complete rows as follows:

1: Ch 7, TC in 5^th ch from the hook and into next 2 chains (=4 TC)

2: Ch 7, turn work, TC in 5^h ch from hook and next 2 chains (=4 TC); turn work to sl st in between the 3^rd and 4^th TC from the previous row; ch 4 (counts as a TC throughout), and add 3 TC in between the 3^rd and 4^th TC from the previous row to form a square.

3: Ch 7, turn your work, TC in 5^th ch from hook, TC in next 2 chains (=4 TC); sl st to previous square in between 3^rd and 4^th TC; ch 4 (=TC), and add 3 TC in that space, sl st to previous square in between 3^rd and 4^th TC. Ch 4 (=TC), and add 3 TC in that space, sl st to previous square in between 3^rd and 4^th TC.

4-38: repeat row 3, adding the required number of squares as you go along.

Fasten off, tidy up your loose end.

Create your border

Fasten on cream yarn to one edge of the V side of the shawl.

Row 1: Ch 1, and place a SC all along the edge of the shawl, making sure they are evenly placed (this is the side where the stitches are not clearly visible, so just place these SC as evenly as you can). There is not a specific amount of SCs which are needed.

Row 2: Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, place 2 more DC inside that 1^st stitch (=3 DC together in one stitch). Place 3 DC into next stitch until EOR.

Row 3: Ch 3 (=DC), turn your work, place a DC into next stitch until EOR.

Row 4: Repeat row 3.

Fasten off, tidy up all loose ends.
